The JD Group at Rishile
The Joshua Doore Group and a whole crowd of young people from PricewaterhouseCoopers came to a Work Day at Rishile. The JD Group gave R15 000 to the centre. It has really mobilised the ECD practitioners and owner to do more for themselves the JD group came through Africa Food for Thought).
We fenced-off and grassed-off an area to provide the children with an outdoor place to play. Many tyres and shelves were painted. A lovely set of shelves was built and painted as well. The teachers and parents of the children helped with a will and said that it really inspired them to work in the best way they could for the children. Parents told Sylvia, the owner, that she should just call them if she needs some help!
The owner is building a brick wall around the property, which will make a nice toilet area possible (replacing some really dreadful bucket toilets and an adult loo with a door that doesn’t close properly as one’s knees get in the way when one is using it), as well as providing a back brick wall to the metal playroom. They will also increase the size of the playroom so that a separate baby room is possible. Some of these improvements will be covered by KFC which provides AFFT with funding.
The young people from the JD Group and people from PricewaterhouseCoopers have promised to come and paint a mural on the wall, led ably by Kirsten Kwan of the JD Group, once it is plastered and given an undercoat. Also Kabelo, from JD who likes climbing will be creating a low climbing, wall for the children! Exciting, happy stuff!
