Make a sick dolly and her bed
Our theme this week is “I’m sick” . And this is what we are doing on Thurday for art!
Main activity: construction activity: making little beds for sick dollies Other activities: Playdough, painting, drawing with chunky pencil crayons (free art is good for children and develops their imaginations better than always telling them what to do for art)
What you will need:
• little boxes like soup boxes
• pieces of scrap cloth to use and sheets, pillows and blankets and clothes for the wooden peg dolly
• a wooden peg to make into a dolly
• glue and glue-spreaders
• scissors
Method:
• Cover a little box with cloth and glue it on to make a ‘bottom sheet’.
• Cut out pieces of cloth to use as a ‘pillow’ and blanket.
• Draw a face on the top of the peg. Glue material on the peg so that it looks like clothes. (You can cut out shapes like skirts, T-shirts and trousers for the children to stick onto their peg doll.)
• Put the ‘sick’ dolly to bed!
Playing with dolls is good for boys and girls.
Playing with dollies is a game which helps the children to learn to nurture and care for others as well as for themselves. Boys need to learn nurturing and self-nurturing skills as well as girls! Playing with dollies also helps children to work through their sad, angry or fearful feelings. Do not worry if a child is cruel to a dolly. It is just them sorting out a problem they have. If a child always plays in a cruel or strange way with a dolly, then you can start worrying and you can ask the parents to come in to find out if there is a problem at home or if someone is abusing the child.
